CHANGING LIVES ONE STUDENT, one family and community AT A TIME
Take Stock in Children Program
A SUSTAINABLE WAY TO SOLVE A HIGH SCHOOL DROP-OUT PROBLEM
In 1992-93 The Rotary Club of Tarpon Springs (RCTS) President, Dan Cullu, asked his Board of Directors to help tackle the appalling 64% graduation rate at Tarpon Springs High School. The RCTS agreed to award each of 10 qualified students a 4-year tuition scholarship for use once they graduated high school. At the time these scholarships were $2,000 per student. The RCTS provided mentors to help them get though school. These were the first ever “Doorways Students”. Later the RCTS partnered with the with the Pinellas Education Foundation (PEF) to help identify students, follow their grades though high school and college, administer funds to colleges and provide mentors. This program is now called “Take Stock in Children” (TSIC) and as of 2026, 1000 students were in the program and the PEF is always looking for more mentors. To raise $20,000 to fund this project, the RCTS started The Tarpon Springs Rotary Triathlon which has now been running for over 30 years. The RYT also became a 501c3 enabling donations to be tax deductible. Now a 4-year tuition scholarship is $5,000 per student and the RYT relies on funds from the triathlon, individual donors and endowments to fun deserving students annually. With matching funds through the PEF and the State of Florida, $5,000 covers 4-years of tuition (currently ~$25,000 at a state university). Students are in need each year; just ask a teacher or police officer. The RYT wants to grow the corpus to be self-stainable in order to help all at-risk students that
apply (usually 10-15 students a year) and play a major part to keep Pinellas high school graduation rates above 95%. In 2026 the PEF came back to us to ask us to fund 2 more students although we had already given out our allotted funds. The need is there and this program works to help students succeed. The success of this program is evident in the graph; and North Pinellas high school graduation rates are up to 98%.
Take Stock in Children Rotary Youth Trust Scholarship Recipient
Aliki Maragis
2001 - Awarded a Doorways (now TSIC) Scholarship in 5th Grade
2011 - Earned Bachelor of Science and Industrial Engineering from USF
2014 - Earned MBA in Finance and Strategy from Concordia in Montreal, Canada
Aliki’s scholarship and participation in the TSIC program has led to a very successful career, taking her all over the world. Aliki fully supports the RYT and TSIC program. At present, she lives in Florida and has given presentations to the Rotary Club of Tarpon Springs as well as RYT donors and potential donors. When she received her scholarship, her mother was very sick and her father was raising 2 girls to the best of his ability, while taking care of his wife’s needs. Aliki remembers that her parents were extremely proud of her when she was awarded the scholarship. It allowed the family to see that Aliki would go to college and it also lifted the huge financial burden of paying for college tuition. It was a huge relief for her parents.
New pathway Scholarship recipient
Kristen Haggerty
Kristen was a single mom who wanted to re-tool her life by going back to college to become a nurse. The RYT gave Kristen a scholarship to help fund the completion of her nursing pre-requisites at St. Petersburg College (SPC). Kristen did not make the cut for the SPC small and competitive nursing program and is now attending a private nursing school. The RYT gave her another scholarship to help her with tuition costs. Recently married, we wish Kristen all the best on her New Pathway journey.
